It has taken me quite some years, and awkward puberty phases, but I feel like I finally have some sort of control over my skin’s condition!
During puberty I did not have very bad acne. I guess I had some hormonal pimples, mostly on my forehead, chin and around my eyebrows. But my worst problem was that I could not get my hands away from them!! Well, let me tell you, the worst thing you can do to a pimple is touching it too much, scratching it or trying to pop it (even though this can be very satisfying sometimes haha). I’m definitely not a skin expert, but what I do know is that hygiene is very important. So better not keep touching your face with your hands!
Another very important, and very obvious, factor for obtaining a clear skin, is drinking plenty of water. I know, I know… everyone says it, so I’m not going to elaborate too much on it. Just drink your water, at least 2 liters a day. If you don’t, you will not only get a really bad headache, but your skin will also not thank you.
Now on to the fun stuff. What is my actual skin care routine, and what products do I use!?
Actually, before telling you all about what I do, I think it’s important to mention that I’m not an expert and that every skin is different. It’s really important to first establish what kind of skin type you have. For instance, for many years I though that I had an oily skin and was prone to get acne. However, I recently discovered that my skin is more combined and actually very sensitive!! Highly important, because I had been using the wrong products for years. So please, first figure out your actual skin type, with the help of an expert if necessary.
My Skincare Morning Routine
Let’s start with my morning skincare routine. After waking up, and being able to actually get my butt to the bathroom, I first prep my face with some cold water. This not only wakes me up, but also gets rid of any sweat or whatever from the nigth before. Then, if I feel like my face really needs it, I use a cleanser to get rid of any excess oils. Most days water is actually enough so I directly apply my serum on my face. Lately, I have been using the Biodermal Pigment Serum. I feel like this product has really been helping with making my skin more smooth and fade some of the little scars I have from touching my pimples haha. It leaves my face feeling smooth, soft and clean!
I have also recently started using SPF 50 on my face daily! Because of the medicine I’m taking for Crohn’s, I’m more sensitive for the sun and therefore want to protect it on a daily basis. I’m using the Biodermal 50+ SPF Sun Cream for Sensitive Skin. Ever since I started using this product, I haven’t been sunburnt on my face, which used to be a huge problem for me. It doesn’t leave my face feeling greasy and it absorbs quickly into the skin. Highly recommend everyone to use some sort of SPF on a daily basis. Although we feel like the sun is our best friend, it can actually really harm your skin. Please keep that in mind 🙂 .
Then it’s time for moisturising!! For this I’ve been using the La Roche-Posay Effaclar H. I used to do an internship at a big company in cosmetics and here I was introduced to the products of La Roche-Posay. One of my colleagues helped me with finding a suitable moisturizer for my skin type and this is what we ended up with! This product is for the oily, but sensitive skin. However, it also hydrates the face, since most products designed for oily skin can actually dry out your skin. Therefore, it works perfect for my combined skin, since it helps with getting rid of oils and pimples, but at the same time hydrates my face enough!
What do I use at night time?
Let’s continue to my night time routine. One thing that has significantly improved my skin’s condition is finding the perfect cleanser!! After taking of my make-up (but also on days I do not wear make-up) I use the Simple Kind to Skin Moisturising Facial Wash. This has honestly made such a difference! What I don’t like about most cleansers is that they usually make my face feel kind of sticky or irritate my skin. Well, this one has been a life-changer. It leaves my face feeling so clean and fresh. Highly recommend this product!
On most days this is all I do skin-care wise at night. One of my colleagues once told me that it is actually better for your skin to refresh on its own at night, without filling up your pores with multiple products. I have no clue whether this is actually true, but I tried it and for me it works! I also like te idea of keeping my face clean at night and let the skin fix itself. However, on some days, if I feel like my skin needs it, I do use a face scrub. I do this no more than twice a week and I use the L’Oréal Paris Nourishing Sugar Scrub. Because my skin is quite sensitive, I do not like to use very harsh products. This sugar scrub is perfect to exfoliate my face!
One more thing to add to my skincare routine, is the use of face masks! I try to do a face mask once a week, but to be honest, I forget about it quite often. For face masks I like to use products that clear out my pores and lately I have been using the L’Oréal Paris Pure Clay Mask – Detox. What I like about this one, when it dries you can actually see ALL of your pores, which makes me feel like they do really clean them haha! It also doesn’t irritate my skin, feels natural and leaves my face feeling fresh!
Well, that’s about it! That’s all I do to take care of my skin. I am so happy to have finally found a good routine that actually works for me 🙂 . I hope this can be of some help for you and feel free to ask me any questions!
